What is a Ketogenic Diet?
The Ketogenic Diet is an ultra-low carb, moderate protein, and high-fat diet. In the absence of carbohydrates, the body’s preferred fuel source, the body is forced into a metabolic stated called ketosis wherein it produces ketones to help fuel the body. Consumption of carbohydrates will knock the body out of ketosis, which is why anything carb-based is generally forbidden on the keto diet unless it is during a scheduled carb refeed.
Tasty Low-Carb Bread
Bread that’s low in carbs–some might say that this is not possible, but it is indeed doable with the right combination of ingredients. Mind you, this recipe is not without its rejects. It took a lot of tweaking and adjusting before this recipe was deemed acceptable for sharing.
The first order of business with this recipe is to take six eggs and separate the whites from the yolks. Don’t discard your yolks though — remember that we’re looking to make good use of healthy fats. Eggs are a near perfect food choice when it comes to eating a keto style diet. They’re an inexpensive source of quality protein and healthy fats, they’re full of essential vitamins and minerals, and their cholesterol content isn’t as bad for you as you many people seem to think. (1) With your eggs separated, the next step is to add in a bit of lemon juice with your egg whites. With that out of the way, you’re going to want to beat the egg whites until soft peaks form and then set them aside.
Next, you’re going to take your egg yolks and combine them with your almond flour, baking powder, salt, and melted ghee. As much as I love using grass fed butter (and it’s especially popular amongst keto followers), I truly believe that ghee just slightly edges it out when it comes to nutritional value. It’s full of fat soluble vitamins and packs in a ton of healthy fatty acids. On top of that, research has also indicated that ghee can be incredibly beneficial for your health, with studies showing that it can help to potentially lower your overall cholesterol levels. (2) All that’s left now for this bread recipe is to gradually fold in your egg white and lemon juice combo into this mixture to finish off the bread dough before placing it in the oven for 30 minutes or so.
I’m usually not too surprised by what kinds of foods are possible to enjoy while eating paleo thanks to the use of clever ingredient hacks. However, I have to admit that I never thought it would be possible to enjoy a warm freshly baked loaf of bread while going keto. Thankfully, this keto bread proves that I couldn’t have been more wrong. Enjoying a loaf of bread if you’re in ketosis is not only possible, but it can be incredibly delicious as well.
P.S. – I mentioned earlier how eggs are pretty much the ultimate keto food. With that in mind, I wanted to share a few other great paleo egg recipes that I’m sure you will enjoy:
